The Opinel No.07 My First Opinel Natural Handle Folding Knife is a great way for children to learn knife skills such as carving, whittling, and food prep. They can also learn how to be safe with dangerous things and handle them with confidence. These are some of the building blocks of a successful life when they grow up.
The blade is made of 12C27 Sandvik Stainless Steel and is 7cm long. The edge on My First Opinel is sharp so that your children can actually use this knife as a knife and also because a dull knife is more dangerous to use than a sharp knife. However, the tip is rounded to prevent accidental pokes while your children are still learning blade safety. The rounded tip also helps prevent Big Brother from getting upset that your children are learning knife skills. As with the adult Opinels, the blade grind is an almost imperceptibly convex grind that cuts like a full-flat grind but reflects light in a more beautiful way.
The blade locks in both the open and closed positions via the iconic Virobloc locking system designed by Marcel Opinel in 1955.
Opinel offers the No.07 My First Opinel with various handle finishes, but this one has the varnished beechwood handle because you want your children to be OG when they grew up rather than hip douchebags. The handle is 10cm long and is sized for a child's hand.
Made in France.
Keep your First Opinel in top working condition with Opinel Maintenance Oil. Maintenance Oil will protect the steel against corrosion and keep the Virobloc turning smoothly. Maintenance Oil will also penetrate the beechwood handles and prevent them from cracking when dry and rotting when wet.
Keep all of your cutlery (even children's knives) nice and sharp. Not only will your blades be more effective when they are sharp, they will actually be safer to use because they will cut with less pressure than a dull blade and behave much more predictably.
There is no single or "best" way to sharpen cutlery, because we all have our different preferences and skill levels. Different sharpening methods will also suit different blade shapes and sizes, and you probably would not use the same sharpening tool on a pocketknife and sword. To make the matter even less universal, some prefer to sharpen at home while others sharpen in the field, so the "best" sharpening tools will necessarily differ. Excellent ways to sharpen include:
- Edge Pro Sharpening System
- Hults Bruk Grinding Stone
- Opinel Manual Knife Sharpener
- Opinel Small Natural Sharpening Whetstone from Lombardia
Opinel Part Number - 001221
Universal Product Code - 3123840012211
