The Opinel Planche La Grande Cutting Board is different from other boards you may have used because it sits raised on your counter. Planche La Grande measures 18" x 10" x 1" and weighs four pounds, but the perimeter is very thin because of the beveled edge on the underside and thus Planche La Grande is delightfully easily to handle and lift from your tabletop. After getting used to the beveled edge and the finger clearance between the cutting board and your counter, other cutting boards will feel much less receptive to your fingers and clumsy to handle. Planche La Grand is heavy enough not slide around like thin cutting boards yet is still easy to handle. Its size is about as large as it can be and still be easily washed in most sinks. This will become your go-to cutting board, and you will probably want to carve on it and even serve on it as well because of the beautiful presentation.
Planche La Grande was designed in collaboration with the Swiss design firm Big Game, and is manufactured in Italy rather than France. Construction is of laminated beechwood. There is a juice gutter around the perimeter, and a deep depression welcomes your thumb when handling Planche La Grande.
Planche La Grande comes unfinished in plain beech. You may continue to use it in its unfinished state or oil it with Opinel Maintenance Oil. Maintenance Oil is a plant-based, food-safe oil that is ideal for maintaining the full range of Opinel knives and cutting boards with a single product. Simply apply a few drops Maintenance Oil to a cloth and rub into the wood.
Planche La Grande is large and heavy enough that you will likely not use it in your field kitchen unless you are cooking for a large party.
