The Snow Peak Japanese Cast Iron Oven 26cm is a 10" dutch oven that is composed of three pieces that can be stacked in different ways to suit different contents or cooking methods. All three pieces are constructed using Snow Peak's ultra-thin casting technology, which enables the pieces to be as thin as 2.25mm and also be compatible with induction stovetops. The material is cast iron, but there is no visible porosity in the material and the surface is very smooth. After seasoning with oil, the pieces take on a very glossy look because the cast iron is so smooth. These are high-technology pieces, but the technology is hidden.

The bottom pot is rounded on the bottom to speed up cooking times. The middle skillet may stack on the pot in either direction to maximize cooking space in the pot (such as for a chicken) or to minimize it (such as for biscuits). The top lid stacks on both the skillet and pot. Both the lid and skillet are rimmed to hold charcoal on top for additional cooking heat, and the skillet will hold charcoal in either orientation.

The pot has two wire handles that fold up so that you can carry the assembled dutch oven pieces easily like a suitcase, and also fold down to provide easy access to the food. The skillet and top have wings on the side for easier handling when they are hot. The pot does not have the traditional cast-iron legs like most dutch ovens for cooking over charcoal. This arrangement is a very real advantage for fourwheelers because heavy dutch ovens with integral legs will eventually wear through aluminum, wood, and polymer kitchen boxes from the bumping and shaking that are inevitable with fourwheeling. Your field kitchen's case will get torn up, or the heavy dutch ovens will bounce and break one or more of the cast-iron legs.

Weight for the complete kit is 16.8 lbs. and the dimensions are 10.6" wide x 5.8" tall with the top lid inverted or 7.3" tall with the top lid stacked with handle up. The pot's capacity is 1.4 gallons and the skillet's is 0.6 gallons.

If you are cooking over very hot charcoal and want to raise your food contents off the floor of the dutch oven, look at the Snow Peak Inner Screen For Cast Iron 26cm. The Inner Screen is a steel grill nets fits both the bottom pot and middle skillet of the dutch oven and prevent foods from burning or overcooking. The Inner Screen will store and transport inside your dutch oven and always be there for when you want to use it.

To transport your dutch oven, look at the Snow Peak Dutch Oven Case M, which will keep the dutch oven's heavy pieces together and protect them as well as the other pieces in your field kitchen.

To handle the dutch oven's hot and heavy pieces, Snow Peak offers the Lifter Pro Set. The set's large and small tools will let you remove the dutch oven's lid even when it is filled with charcoal, and also let you handle the skillet.

If you want a skillet that shares the ultra-thin casting technology and rustic good looks of the Dutch Oven, look at the GSI Outdoors GUIDECAST 12 Inch Frying Pan. The GUIDECAST is a cast-iron skillet, but is lighter than a carbon-steel skillet. And its smooth bowl and raked handle mimic the carbon-steel skillet and make it a delight to use.

To facilitate handling of the Dutch Oven and its very hot fuel, Snow Peak has available its Fire Side Gloves. The Fire Side Gloves are constructed of leather and have gauntlets that extend well beyond the wrist to protect you from heat, sparks, and embers of burning wood and charcoal. The gloves have a beautiful brown color that will darken and only get better with age. The dark navy fabric liners are secured with Velcro and are removable for washing.
