Opinel Green Hand Pruner (001628)

The Opinel Green Hand Pruner is a beautiful and effective way to keep your garden groomed.  Like many of EE's products, this is one that John bought for his own use and he ended up liking it so much that he wanted to sell it.

The Green Hand Pruner will cut branches up to 3/4" (20mm) in diameter, if you have the hand strength.  A 3/4" branch doesn't cut easily, so the blade span of these pruners will likely not be the limiting factor for you.  If a branch proves to be too much to snip through, use a hand saw.

The blades and handle tangs are made of stainless steel for corrosion resistance and easy clean-up.  The blades are spring-loaded so that they will open automatically and you need only close your hand to close the blades.  The spring pressure is just right and not fatiguing to the hand even after doing hundreds of cuts.  And the spring is sealed against dirt contamination.

The yellow slider stops in three different positions:

• Fully forward to keep the blades closed against one another for storage
• Halfway to allow the blades to open 10mm (at the cutting sweet spot of the blades) when trimming small branches
• Fully backward to allow the blades to swing open to their full 20mm width (at the sweet spot) when pruning large branches

Probably the majority of your garden pruning will be on the "Halfway" setting.  This is where the Green Hand Pruner really shines because the amount of hand and finger movement required for each cut is less.  The smaller hand movement plus the spring-assisted opening of the blades combine to make this pruner very easy on the hand and you fatigue a lot less on big jobs.

The handle is varnished beechwood and the accents are a beautiful pea-green color.  The wood and plastic cover full-tang stainless steel handles that are very tough.  Your hand power will give up far before you ever break a handle.

While designed for the garden, hand pruners can also be invaluable to the fourwheeler if you drive in mountain or overgrown areas and want to clear brush so that you don't trash your vehicle's paintwork.  Many fourwheelers in such areas carry a cordless chainsaw for such tasks, but a hand saw and set of pruners are also very effective.
