The Opinel Grilling Knife Set is a large cooking set composed of three pieces:
- Special No.12B Stainless Steel Opinel Folding Knife with bottle opener (XL size with 6.3" blade, 14" extended length, 8" folded length)
- Stainless steel Spatula+ (blade measures 3.5" wide x 6" long like a flat top spatula, and is considerably bigger than nearly all home kitchen spatulas)
- XL Stainless Steel Tongs (16" long)
Unlike the bikepacker-sized and very portable Opinel Nomad Cooking Kit, this is a very large grilling set that is at more at home in the backyard, outdoor kitchen, and automobile field kitchen. Both the tongs and mounted Spatula+ are 16" long for hand clearance when cooking large amounts of food over very hot fires. The tongs weigh 11 oz. and the mounted Spatula+ weighs 11 oz.
The special 12B folding knife is considerably larger than a typical Opinel No.12 folder (16cm blade on the special No.12B vs. 12cm blade on the typical No.12) and also features a bottle opener on the pommel end. But just like the usual No.12 Opinels, the special 12B folding knife features:
- A blade that locks in both open and closed positions via Opinel's famous Virobloc
- Classic Yatagan Style blade shape that was inspired by a Turkish saber
- Almost imperceptibly convex grind that cuts like a full-flat grind but reflects light in a more beautiful way
- 12C27 Sandvik Stainless Steel blade material for corrosion resistance
- Varnished beechwood handle
- French-Rustic design that is beautiful to look at and a joy to use
- Very compact and convenitent transport because the knife folds in half and no blade guard is required for safety
The Spatula+ mounts to the special 12B folding knife in a manner reminiscent of the Opinel Picnic+ Cutlerly Insert Set, where the Spatula+ inserts into the tip of the special No.12B folding knife and is then locked in place by turning the iconic Virobloc safety ring designed by Marcel Opinel in 1955. (The Spatula+ will not fit onto typical No.12 Opinels and fits only the special No.12B.) The left and front edges of the Spatula+ are beveled if you want to use it as a makeshift blade to break up large pieces of food.
The XL tongs are big at 16" long and 11 oz. weight, but are very easy to use because the jaws come to rest only 3.5" apart and with minimal spring pressure. Many tongs have jaws that come to rest very far apart and are heavily sprung and tiring to close repeatedly. When squeezed together, the jaws meet up perfectly (unlike many tongs where the jaws don't meet up and require you to hold them in a particular way, which is even more tiring). The XL tongs are serrated for grabbing meats and vegetables, and the pommel end of the tongs is notched to use as a lifter for hot grill grates.
