The J.T. Brooks Automatic Tire Deflators PRO II are the latest deflators from Brooks and have replaced the older PRO model. The differences between the new PRO II and older PRO are:
- PRO II is up to 30% faster than PRO
- larger activation knob on PRO II to prevent inadvertent loss of lock ring
- more legible PSI scale on PRO II
The older PRO deflators remain excellent and there is really need to replace them if that is what you already have. While the PRO II Deflators may be faster, you will find that you are never the last one in your group to air down because you are airing down all four times at once. So deflating at faster than even PRO speeds will just mean more waiting for your mates to finish.
Like most of the deflators currently on the market, the Brooks Deflators:
- start deflating automatically when you thread them onto your tires' valve stems
- stop deflating automatically when your tires reach the preset target pressure you have set
- may be adjusted to different target pressures an infinite number of times without wear or damage
- come in a pack of four to deflate all four tires simultaneously or you can have a "high pair" for gravel and "low pair" for sand dunes or rock-crawling
- store and transport inside the included pouch to prevent loss
However, the Brooks Deflators are distinctly superior to most other deflators in two ways:
- Most other deflators adjust by trial and error of inflating and deflating and adjusting the deflators, whereas the Brooks Deflators have graduated markings that let you adjust them on the fly. Just turn the black adjustment shaft until your desired pressure lines up with the top of the nickel body and then tighten the lock ring.
- The Brooks Deflators have a very broad 3-32 PSI target pressure range, so the need for specialty "light" or "heavy" models is really eliminated for most fourwheeling and you can handle everything from Pismo Beach to the Mojave Road with one set of deflators.
The Brooks Deflators are plated with nickel for corrosion resistance and come with a nylon storage pouch. The pouch is large enough to hold extra Alligator Ventilfabrik Round Top Valve Caps, and John likes to hold lots of extras in his pouch to hand out to the slovenly poor people with plastic valve caps.
An alternative to the Brooks Deflators is the Over-Sand Fully Adjustable Automatic Tire Deflators, which also adjust by a scale rather than trial and error. Both are excellent and your preference may come down to the color. But keep in mind that many people find reading a micrometer scale confusing and may prefer the linear scale of the Brooks Deflators.
If you prefer to air down with a conventional deflator, or you want to minimize your gear by combining your inflator and deflator into a single tool, take a look at the ARB Digital Tire Inflator/Deflator.
No matter which method you use to air down, you will have to air up before hitting the highway and will require onboard air on your vehicle. You will also require onboard air to repair flat tires, which will likely be 90% of your trail fixes.
